Preparing for DLD and Dyslexia Testing
What to Do Before Your Appointment
1. Share reading screenings or evaluations done at school or privately ahead of time. This can help us plan your child’s evaluation.
2. Get a good night of sleep.
3. If your child has been prescribed reading glasses, you must bring them with you.
4. Continue taking any medications as prescribed by your child’s doctor.
5. Complete and submit the online intake forms. If you printed the forms, please bring them with you.
6. Prepare your payment. The payment is expected in full at the first appointment, by cash or check only. For more details, please contact us before your appointment.
7. You may pack light finger food for your child. Examples of appropriate, quick snacks during testing include goldfish, pretzels, carrot sticks, sliced cheese, juice boxes, or water.

What to Expect During the Evaluation
1. A single evaluation session may last about 2.5 hours. Family members are invited to either stay in the waiting room or run nearby errands. We request that you have your phone handy in case we need to get in touch with you during the session.
2. We will take some short brain breaks. These breaks include time for your child to use the restroom, play short games, snack, or just get up and move around.
3. Testing takes brain power. After a session, your child may be sleepy, ready for lunch, or both.
What to Expect After the Evaluation
1. Your child’s comprehensive evaluation report will be complete within one month, often even earlier.
2. A family meeting will be scheduled to discuss the results of the evaluation in detail. We encourage you to ask lots of questions.
3. You will receive a written report that includes explanations of the tests, your child’s testing performance, any diagnoses (such as dyslexia or developmental language disorder/DLD), and our recommendations for your next steps.

Why an Early Dyslexia or DLD Diagnosis Is Important
These learning disorders can affect reading, spelling, writing, and language comprehension, often making learning in the classroom challenging. A dyslexia or DLD diagnosis may serve as evidence to support a request for a school-based educational plan tailored to address learning needs.
While it is never too late to be tested, the sooner you seek out a diagnosis, the earlier your child can get the support they need.
